Human > Artificial: You Are the Intelligence is an interactive AI literacy and identity workshop designed specifically for Grades 6–8. This session goes beyond definitions and tech vocabulary. It helps students understand what AI actually is, how it works, and most importantly, how to use it without outsourcing their own thinking. Students begin by exploring a foundational truth: AI does not think. It predicts. Through guided discussion and a hands-on “human neural network” simulation, participants experience how data, bias, and human input shape every AI output. This interactive activity demonstrates that machines are powered by human intelligence, not the other way around . From there, the workshop moves into one of the most important distinctions in the digital age: AI as a helper vs. AI as a replacement. Students evaluate real-world scenarios and reflect honestly on how they’ve used AI in school. They learn that while AI can assist with brainstorming, outlining, and explaining concepts, it should never replace learning, critical thinking, or creativity. The session is grounded in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), reinforcing self-awareness and responsible decision-making. Students are guided through a practical three-step AI Decision Framework: Am I still learning? Am I still thinking? Can I explain it? If they cannot answer “yes” to all three, they are encouraged to rethink their use of the tool. Throughout the workshop, reflection exercises anchor the message in identity. Students complete prompts such as “I am the intelligence. AI is my assistant when I use it to…” and write a short letter to their future selves outlining how they will use technology responsibly. The closing message is clear: tools do not determine your future. Your thinking does .
